birthday party: part I

On Friday I went to see my sister in Helsinki and stayed until Sunday. We had a swell time: we went to the movies, ate a scrumptious dinner in a Chinese restaurant, took a long walk on the frozen sea, and spent a good few hours in the sauna while enjoying a good few glasses of refreshments (just lemonade, mind you). We also visited the art museum Ateneum, where we were stricken by a Kalevala-themed exhibition. It was amazing! The weekend was so busy that I forgot to take pictures.

On Sunday I travelled two hours on a bus to see my parents. I went skiing in the woods and made a long walk in a field that was covered in at least two feet of snow (very efficient exercise).

On Monday I celebrated my 22nd birthday for the first time: my mother baked a cake which I decorated with chocolate letters and little papery parasols (I also put parasols in the ice cream cups, they were so cute!). And we had a drink in my honour.

On this week's Friday (the actual day of my birth) I will celebrate for the second time; this time with friends!

in the past few days

On Sunday my sister and I went for a walk on the lake. There were lots of little children sledding with their parents and dozens of skiing trails zigzagged across the ice. The air was clear and crisp and it was the perfect winter day!

On Monday we had an exam on Language and Terminology for Special Purposes (I finished the exam among the last and therefore the professor seemed to think I hadn't done very well, but in reality I'm just a slow writer).

Yesterday I got my hair done and I think it'll take time to get used to my new look. This morning when I saw myself in the mirror I startled because I thought I looked like someone from the Village of the Damned. But I don't, really. I just look different.

Tomorrow is the first day of the mid-term break, and I can't wait to let my freshly cut and dyed hair down!

wintery pleasures

This winter has been exceptionally snowy and crisp (compared to the sloshy and slightly depressing winters of the previous few years) and I'm completely bonkers about it! I've not missed the chance to make snow angels or to go sledding. Plus I love how everything outside looks like it's veiled in silver.

Today I've been working on a translation assignment and drunk lots of tea (strawberry-cream flavoured rooibos, yum!) But somehow I've also managed to find enough time to watch an episode of X-files with my sister. Can't go a single day without resting my eyes on Fox Mulder.

I've recently found myself a lovely new hobby: postcrossing. I have now received my first two postcards; from Holland and Romania. What I find fetching about postcrossing is that just by sending a postcard you get to connect (if only for a little while) with a total stranger halfway round the world. It makes the world seem smaller and frendlier.

the beginning

I've been thinking about writing a blog for some time now, and yesterday I suddenly decided to get to it. I think it's the creative side of writing a blog that fascinates me the most (although I can't promise I'll manage to be super creative in all my entries).

I could perhaps start by telling something about myself:

-I'm 21 years old (although my birthday is on the 13th of March, so I'll be 22 soon enough)
-I love chocolate (like most women do, I suppose) and tea, especially white tea with honey
-whenever I can find the time for it, I paint or draw something; it's like traveling to a different world of my own for while
-my favourite perfume is a combination of jasmine and dark chocolate; I wear it every day
-I'm very fond of reading, and lately I've been trying to read in English as much as possible to practice my language skills

I'm not exactly sure why I wrote the perfume bit up there. It seems rather trivial compared to the other things, which are the usual type of basic facts that everyone always tells about themselves. It's just that I really, really like the perfume.

Well, to anyone who happens to read this: I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I will!
